Stories of Strength, Connection & Change

Behind every program is a woman, a family, and a story of strength.

At AWOV, our impact is measured not only in numbers, but in resilience and empowerment built, isolation reduced, and lives strengthened through connection and support.

Story 1 - Settlement Support (SETS Program)
Find Confidence in a New Country

The Challenge
“Fatima” (name changed) arrived in Australia with her 5 children after the 2021 crisis in Afghanistan. She had limited English, little understanding of Australian systems, and no local support network. Everyday tasks such as booking appointments, understanding Centrelink letters, or enrolling her children in school felt overwhelming.

How AWOV Helped
Through AWOV’s Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) program, Fatima received:

  • One-on-one, culturally safe settlement support

  • Assistance understanding government and health services

  • Attended AWOV's English Language Classes

  • Connection to AWOV’s weekly information sessions

The Outcome
Fatima now confidently attends appointments on her own, participates regularly in community activities, and has built friendships that provide ongoing peer support. She describes feeling “settled, safe, and hopeful about the future.”

Story 2 - Community Connect
From Isolation to Belonging

The Challenge
Many women attending AWOV experience social isolation, especially after migration, family separation, or trauma. Several participants shared that they spent most days at home with limited social contact and community connection.

How AWOV Helped
AWOV’s weekly Community Connect Program created a welcoming, informal space where women could:

  • Cook and share meals together

  • Learn about health and nutrition

  • Learn about services through conversation

  • Support one another emotionally

The Outcome
Participants formed friendships, increased confidence, and developed a strong sense of belonging. Many women now attend other AWOV programs and volunteer within the community.

"Since joining AWOV's community connect, I have made lifelong friends and have a sense of community belonging. I look forward to cooking new recipes every week"

- Zahra, 37

Story 3 - Young Women's Karate and Resilience Program
Building Strength Inside and Out

The Challenge
AWOV conducted a community consultation amongst young Afghan women. Young women and girls in the community reported low confidence, limited opportunities for physical activity, and concerns around personal safety.

How AWOV Helped
AWOV delivered a culturally sensitive karate and resilience program focused on:

  • Self-defence skills

  • Confidence and leadership

  • Physical wellbeing

  • Peer support in a safe environment

The Outcome
Participants demonstrated improved self-esteem, confidence, and resilience. Parents reported positive changes in their daughters’ confidence and willingness to participate in community life.

“I feel stronger. I know how to protect myself and believe in myself.”

- Nasima, 18

Story 4 - Weekly Senior Group
Connection at Every Stage of Life

The Challenge
Older members of the Afghan community often experience loneliness, language barriers, and limited access to social activities.

How AWOV Helped
AWOV’s weekly senior women’s group provides:

  • Social connection and peer support

  • Gentle exercises activities and outings

  • Information provision on services available

  • Cultural celebrations and shared experiences

The Outcome
Participants report improved wellbeing, reduced isolation, and a renewed sense of purpose. The group has become a trusted space for friendship and mutual care.

“This group gives me something to look forward to every week.”

- Shahbibi, 78
